Fire Within 2, 2009 has recently been commissioned by the Hobson Bay City Council and when completed will be installed along the M1 freeway from Melbourne to Geelong at the Kororoit Creek Road junction. This project is financed by both the Hobson Bay City Council and Vic Roads. The project manager is Tania Blackwell from the Hobson Bay City Council.
Fire Within 2 is an installation that consists of 23 components, the material used is epoxy resin and steel painted off-white, and the size of the sculpture is H 4.2 x W 12.2 x L 12.2 meters.
The "brief" consists of the following statements:
"To create a large gateway artwork that is integrated into the site, innovative and is highly visible from the High Street exit/entrance and the Princes Freeway Laverton."
And the following safety points from Vic Roads:
"The art work must not be animated or reflective - The artwork must not create a confusing or dominant background which might dazzle or distract drivers, or be mistaken for a traffic control device, such as containing red circles, octagons, crosses, triangles or arrows."
The artwork will need to be visually strong and reflect the west and become an Images of the West artwork.
Fire Within 2 is again a major piece of installation sculpture and many professionals have been involved including engineers, lighting engineers and landscape architects.
The team effort involved in the production and completion and installation of the works mentioned demonstrates the competence of the artisans, engineers, architects and other professionals gathered together on each occasion necessary for the successful completion of these projects within set time lines and within budget on each occasion.
Fire Within 2
Trapped, trapped in the skin
looking out, no room to move
Fire within, burning burning.
The poet 'speaks'
but what will the poet say
perhaps nothing can be said
the 'speak' can only be 'made'
